Cap d'Antibes
Overview
Background
The idyllic peninsula of Cap d’Antibes is located between Nice and Cannes and consists mainly of prestigious, sprawling estates and stunning natural scenery. While the neighbouring localities of Antibes and Juan les Pins offer a lively and bustling atmosphere, Cap d’Antibes remains a tranquil and isolated haven.
Regarded for many years as a barren promontory, the last 150 years have seen Cap d’Antibes transform into one of the most exclusive parts of the French Riviera. Aristocrats and royalty began frequenting the Riviera in the winters of the 19th century due its warm climate and pleasant conditions but in the 1920’s a wealthy American couple, Sara and Gerald Murphy, discovered the charms of the cape’s sandy beaches and beautiful sunshine during the summer months. By persuading the elegant Hotel du Cap Eden Roc to open over the summer (the first hotel in the French Riviera to do so) they began a trend which saw writers, painters and film stars spend their summers in the area.
Today Cap d’Antibes continues to attract the wealthy and the famous who enjoy the privacy and peace afforded by the wild landscape of the area.
