Paris 16e Arrondissement & Neuilly
Overview
Background
The 16e arrondissement was once the site of three small villages (Passy, Auteuil and Chaillot) located in the countryside outside the main city, an area which was a popular spot for the out-of-town retreats of the aristocracy. The replanning of the Paris in the 19th century saw the area developed and it was incorporated into the city in 1860. The adjacent town of Neuilly sur Seine, although a separate commune, is generally regarded as an extension of the 16e and, despite once being an industrial area, it is now one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods in France.
The western side of Paris is well known for its quiet refined suburbs, wide avenues and elegant mansions and boasts some wonderful examples of early 20th century architecture. The neighbourhood is home to many members of Parisian high society though the quiet streets and general lack of entertainments make the area more suitable for families and older professionals than those looking for bustling streets or nightlife.
Profile
The 16e arrondissement is well.known for its upscale character and it attracts wealthy buyers from both Paris and abroad (amongst which there is a majority of Italians followed by Moroccans). This district of Paris has a significant concentration of rich residents, particularly in the most prestigious areas around the Jardin de Ranelagh. Furthermore the presence of many embassies and institutions as well as the proximity to La Défense are additional advantages for diplomats and international professionals. However it is interesting to note that there are difference between its four neighbourhoods of Auteil, Muette, Porte Dauphine and Chaillot.
If you cut the arrondissement in two, the northern section is characterised by wide avenues with plush, luxury period buildings while the south is popular with families, especially near the Rue de Passy and Boulevard Exelmans, which has the village ambience and excellent schools. Private residential areas such as Villa Montmorency and Villa Boileau are sought after by the very wealthy who are looking for privacy and security. Finally, the area south of Boulevard Exelmans, up to Porte de Saint Cloud is generally considered to be less attractive.
