Annecy
Sometimes referred to as ‘the Venice of Savoie’ the tranquil town of Annecy lies on the northern tip of Lake Annecy, just 40 km south of Geneva. With its canals, bridges and cobbled streets it is an historically important location. Annecy is home to a number of interesting attractions including the 14th century château, once home to the counts of Geneva, and the Palais d’Ile, a former prison which sits in the middle of the canal Thiou and now houses a local history museum. Surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery the sparkling lake of Annecy is also a popular location for water sports and sailing.
Lyon
Lyon is France’s third largest city and is capital of the Rhône department. Once famous for its silk trade it is now known as the gastronomic capital of France and is also home to a number of interesting historical and architectural sites. Highlights include the atmospheric winding streets of the old town, known as the Croix-Rousse, and also the beautiful Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Lyon.
Martigny
Just over the border in Switzerland, Martigny is one of the four major towns of the canton of Valais, a centre of agriculture known for its fruits and wines. Martigny is a cultural centre and is home to several heritage sites thanks to its ancient Gallo-Roman remains with the Fondation Pierre Giannada being one of the best known Swiss museums.
Chamonix
