Cannes

Overview

Background

Cannes was originally settled by the Ligurians and was then occupied by the Ancient Romans who named the area Cannoïs, after the cane that grew in its marshland. Cannes was a simple fishing port until 1834 when Lord Brougham, an English aristocrat, fell in love with the town and decided to build a home there, returning every winter for the therapeutic sunshine. Followed by many of his peers, Brougham’s influence quickly made Cannes an important meeting place for British and European high society and the building of the railroad at the end of the 19th century  encouraged even more visitors and residents.

Today Cannes is best known for its prestigious festivals and events and, while it perhaps has less cultural attractions than other area of the Cote d’Azur, the lure of the world-famous Croisette with its designer shops, celebrated restaurants and sandy beaches continue to attract affluent visitors and residents from all corners of the globe.

Who Lives in Cannes

Cannes reputation for luxury and its excellent amenities make the town one of the most popular places to purchase property along the French Riviera. In the centre of town the most sought after area is certainly La Croisette where luxury apartments of various sizes can be found; in this area the most luxurious properties are the penthouses overlooking the boulevard most famous of the Cote d’Azur, which all offer a scenic view and have a roof garden and other amenities.

The most exclusive villas can be found approximately 4km away in the heights of La Californie and Super Cannes where large gated mansions offer wonderful views of the Mediterranean and the surrounding countryside; the properties in these prestigious areas generally offer more privacy, far from the crowded centre of town.

Cannes has always appealed to an international community and there are still a wide number of nationalities living in the area contributing to the cosmopolitan ambience.
