Saint-Paul de Vence

Background

Saint Paul de Vence is one of the oldest medieval villages on the Cote d’Azur and is located on a hill in the countryside near Nice. Originally built as a defence against Saracen attacks, in the 1920’s Saint Paul de Vence, began to attract an artistic community including  Matisse, Modigliani, Cezanne and Chagall and the latter even chose to be buried in Saint Paul.  Inspired by the soft light and amazing panoramic views, these artists usually visited the infamous Colombe d’Or guest house and restaurant and often left a work of art in lieu of payment meaning that today the dining room is adorned with paintings and sculptures by some of the most famous names of the 20th century. With its medieval architecture, ramparts, fountains and attractive cobbled streets Saint Paul is still a haven for artists and art lovers and is one of the most popular spots on the Riviera and an estimated 2.5 million visitors a year come to experience the special atmosphere and fascinating history of the village.
