Perugia

Perugia is the capital of the Umbria region and a thriving student town with a famous university for foreigners as well as a fine arts school and a music academy. Perugia has a strong arts scene and is also home to the National Gallery of Umbria which is located in the stunning Palazzo dei Priori in the heart of town. With some of the best preserved medieval streets in Europe, Perugia offers stunning architecture and a significant historical heritage. The young population of the city ensures hip boutiques and good nightlife but at the same time Perugia maintains its elegance and style.

Orvieto

Perched high on the top of a plateau of volcanic tufa which hides a network of underground caves, Orvieto is one of the most charming large towns of the regions and conveniently situated between Rome and Florence. The elaborate striped cathedral, the Duomo, dates from the 13th century and is one of the jewels of Italy with its intricate façade and the incredible Last Judgment frescoes by Luca Signorelli. As well as being the producer of the famed Orvieto Classico white wine, the town has strong links with the Slow Food movement and offers a great selection of restaurants.

Lago Trasimeno

Located right on the border with Tuscany, Lake Trasimeno covers about 128 km sq and is the fourth largest lake in Italy. Remembered as the site where Hannibal ambushed two Roman legions in 217 BC it is now a popular site for swimming, windsurfing and sailing, earning it the name ‘the Umbrian Riviera’. The lake is surrounded by picturesque countryside and a number of stunning castles as well as some beautiful properties complete with spectacular views over the lake.

Todi

Mythology states that Todi was founded by Hercules but the town today lies on top of a number of Ancient Roman ruins. Todi is one of the best known Umbrian hill towns and it occupies a convenient position in the south of the region with easy access to Rome, making it a trendy weekend retreat for city dwellers. The beautiful medieval architecture, impressive gothic cathedral and evocative views over the surrounding countryside have also contributed to Todi’s popularity with artists and painters.
