Zermatt
Overview
Background
Situated at the foot of the Matterhorn, one of the most photographed mountains in the world thanks to its pyramid shape, the resort resort of Zermatt has plenty of attributes to attract both residents and visitors. A symbol of both Switzerland and the High Alps, the town is encircled by peaks reaching 4000m and is known for being the highest skiing area in the Alps. Zermatt was originally a village with just a few small wooden houses which began to develop in the 1840’s, around the same time as Chamonix. However, when Edward Whymper climbed the Matterhorn in 1865, the town was thrust into the spotlight and gained fame and visitors.
The lifestyle in Zermatt is based around its authentic character and traditions. Indeed since 1947 cars have been forbidden from entering the town centre. Zermatt is well loved by hikers thanks to its numerous possibilities for excursions and also by mountaineers as is the final location of the Haute Route, a route which starts near Chamonix and Mont Blanc. The quality of the amenities offered is also of note with not only perfectly maintained pistes but also excellent restaurants which cater to the select and wealthy clientele.
