Sierre
Ideally situated between the Haut and Bas Valais, Sierre attracts visitors who come to admire its sunny climate and natural beauty. The Romans called it the ‘town of 100 hills’ because of its location nestled among a cluster of hills. Over the centuries the village has expanded from the castle and fortresses that were constructed on one of those hills. The heritage of the town is rich and can be seen in the beautiful architecture of the town hall and the quaint streets of the old town which are lined with picturesque buildings including the church of Saint Catherine. The central location of Sierre also makes it a convenient base for trips to the lovely surrounding villages of Chandolin, Grimentz and Zinal.
Lac Souterrain de St-Leonard
Found between Sion and Sierre, the St Leonard Lake is the largest underground lake in Europe and is located between 30 and 70 metres under the vineyards of the region. The 300m long lake can be visited by boat which provides a great opportunity to get to know more about the history and geology of the site. The cave has been open to the public since 1949 and welcomes 80,000 visitors every year.
