Background
With 63,000 inhabitants the 5e arrondissement is not a highly populated district but more than 150,000 people, including many students, frequent the area daily. It covers a large part of the Latin Quarter, known throughout the world for is prestigious universities including the Sorbonne, which was founded in the 13th century. The arrondissement is located on the site of the Roman city of Lutetia and some vestiges can still be seen today such as the ruins of the amphitheatre and the thermal baths at the Musée de Cluny.
The district is particularly known for its lively atmosphere and also for the concentration of educational establishments and universities including the Collège de France, the Ecole Normale Supérieure, the Ecole des Mines and the Curie Institute as well as several highly-regarded secondary schools.
