Situated in the foothills of the Mont Blanc massif, Megève is a picturesque alpine village which despite its exclusive reputation has managed to maintain a truly French essence. Much of the ambience of Megève is provided by the pedestrianised cobbled streets and the charming central square complete with horse-drawn sleighs. The town is noted for its wonderful old-style wooden chalets and is, in fact, known as the birthplace of the chalet. The architect Henri Jacques Le Meme was inspired by the old farmhouses of the region and built 200 chalets in Megève, three of which are now classified as historic buildings.

Megève is somewhat more cultural than many of the ski resorts of the area and has several museums and cultural attractions which recount the history of the village as well as well as the distinctive church of Saint Jean Baptiste, built in 1037. The town is also the first commune situated above 1000m altitude to have been awarded the maximum Four Flower award for Villages in Bloom.
