Background

With 190,000 inhabitants Geneva is the second largest city in Switzerland but the biggest tourist destination, with its appeal reaching much further than you would expect for such a relatively small town. Geneva is home to many international companies and institutions, including the European headquarters of the United Nations, and it has built up an important reputation in the world of finance.

Geographically and politically Geneva is a the capital of the Republic and Canton of Geneva and sits at the foot of two mountain chains, the Alps and the Jura. The city is spread over 280 km2 and lies at the south-western end of Lake Léman, better known as Lake Geneva.

It is not surprising that Geneva regularly ranks as the world’s most liveable city as it brilliantly combines the charm of its quiet streets with cultural grandeur and economic wealth. In addition, the prestige of its institutions attract people from all over the world which creates a cultural and social mix and gives the city its unique atmosphere.
